About Algonquin, IL

Potawatomi Native Americans occupied present-day Algonquin before any other settlers. Samuel Gillilan was the first non-native settler to come to the area — he moved from Virginia and arrived in 1834. Several other settlers moved to the area soon after he did. The settlers argued on a name for their community, with suggestions like Denny's Ferry, Cornishville and Osceola. They finally agreed on the name Algonquin in December 1847. Although they had a name, the Village of Algonquin would not be incorporated until 1890.

The Village Hall of Algonquin was built in 1907 and is still standing today. The community was a small town for most of its history, up until the 1980s. There was enormous growth in residential development. Today, more than 30,000 people call Algonquin home.
