About Downtown Denver, CO

In 1858, a group of gold prospectors established Montana City during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. General William Larimer named the area Denver City after James W. Denver, the Kansas Territorial governor. After Colorado joined the Union, a statewide ballot decided that Denver City would be the permanent capital. The city's name was then changed to Denver.
