About Richfield, MN

The community that would later become Richfield was founded in the 1850s. It was a small community of mostly farmers. Like Minneapolis, it was close to historic Fort Snelling. 

The city of Richfield was officially incorporated in 1908, but the name Richfield was used long before the city's incorporation. In May 1858, residents held their first town meeting. Later that year, the name Richfield was chosen for their community because of the fertile land where they were located. 

The community would steadily grow through the coming decades, and Richfield experienced a population boom during the 1940s and 1950s. Veterans from World War II were moving to the area, and during that time, the population grew from less than 10,000 to 42,500 people. Today, Richfield is home to around 35,000 residents.
