About Fort Wayne, Indiana

The area that would later become Fort Wayne has been an important and strategic location for hundreds of years. It sits at the confluence of three rivers — the St. Mary's, the St. Joseph and the Maumee Rivers. Starting in the 1600s, this location would trade hands a number of times, between indigenous peoples, the French and then the British. 

After the American Revolution, General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, the city's namesake, established this location as the first American fort in the region. By 1824, the Indiana General Assembly founded Allen County with Fort Wayne as its hub. In 1829, the Town of Fort Wayne was incorporated.

Today, Fort Wayne remains the heart of the upper Midwest, sitting at the crossroads of nearly every major city in the region — including Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. Fort Wayne is the second-largest city in Indiana and home to nearly 300,000 residents.
