About Sycamore, IL

The first attempt to settle Sycamore actually failed. The early settlers in the area came from Europe in 1835, but the area that they settled was not even present-day Sycamore. Two years later, the site for the town was moved and settled at the current location of the city.

The Dekalb County Courthouse is in Sycamore, but its location was disputed throughout the area's history. Men from the now-defunct towns of Brush Point and Coltonville wanted to have the courthouse in their towns instead of Sycamore. One man even stooped to some shady tactics — lying about an election — to get his way. The building's location was again disputed in the early 1900s, with the result eventually coming out in Sycamore's favor.

After the drama around the courthouse settled, Sycamore experience steady growth. It was incorporated as a village in 1858 and a city in 1869. Today, Sycamore is home to almost 18,000 residents.
