Things to See and Do in Champaign, IL

What time of year is the best time to visit Champaign, IL? If you live here or you’ve visited the area in the past, you know that any time of year is the ideal time to spend a day (or more) in Champaign. Whether you prefer cultural activities, sports, outdoor parks or great eateries, you’ll find something that interests you in and around Champaign.

Here are five ideas to get your Champaign visit started:

  1. William M. Staerkel Planetarium

The William M. Staerkel Planetarium is the place to go for educational programming that’s appropriate for a wide range of audiences, including adults, Scout troops, daycare groups and students of all ages. This venue has public shows every weekend throughout the year and matinees every Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning for younger visitors during the summer.

While most of the site’s programming is educational, some of it is geared exclusively toward providing entertainment, such as Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” full-dome show.

  1. Orpheum Children’s Science Museum

The Orpheum Children’s Science Museum lets kids and adults explore science and the arts in a safe, fun environment that’s like no other. This museum is located in what used to be a vaudeville and movie theater that was built in 1914.

It is currently recognized as one of the state’s best examples of the adaptive reuse of an historic property, and the museum educates the public with exhibits, special programs and events, parties and field trips. Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade are welcome to participate in the museum’s camps, clubs and pop-in programming.

  1. The Virginia Theatre

The Virginia Theatre is a performing arts and movie venue that’s been providing entertainment for the greater Champaign community since 1921. Currently owned and operated by the Champaign Park District, The Virginia Theatre has a full schedule of live performances and movie screenings that runs year-round.

If you want to see a show in an historic setting that has comfortable seating, head over to The Virginia Theatre for an unforgettable experience.

  1. Public Parks and Trails

The Champaign Park District maintains a generous number of community parks and trails. Whether you want to get a good workout in or you just want to enjoy a relaxing picnic in the outdoors, visiting one of Champaign’s parks or trails is a great way to spend some quality time alone or with some friends and family members.

Some of the parks and trails you should check out include: First Street Trail, Robeson Meadows Trail, Town Center Park and Citizens Park.

  1. Memorial Stadium

While Memorial Stadium is an unbelievably fun place to attend a game, you don’t have to be a sports fan for this venue to interest you. The stadium is more than “just” the host of football games and graduation ceremonies.

Built in 1923, the stadium is also a lasting tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country during WWI. You’ll find the names of these national heroes on the 200 columns that are located on the east and west sides of the stadium.
