About Holland, MI

Ottawa Native Americans originally inhabited the area until 1847, when Dutch settlers arrived. The settlers left the Netherlands because of economic hardship and formed a community for religious freedom. For some time, the Dutch colonists and Ottawa Native Americans lived in the area together. Eventually, the settlers purchased the land from the Ottawa, who then moved north to maintain their traditions and way of life. Later on, community leaders decided to move the community farther north.

In March 1867, the city of Holland was officially incorporated with Isaac Cappon as its first mayor. Today, many Holland residents are still of Dutch heritage. The city is home to more than 33,000 people.
